Phil Hey Interview Raw |
What happens when four of the areas first-call jazz musicians get a monthly gig where they are simply allowed to pursue the music they choose? Magic!
As of September 21, 2004 The Phil Hey Quartet features Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, Tom Lewis on bass and Phil on drums and has been an Artists' Quarter favorite for the past 5 years. No surprise really. This is a no-nonsense, uncompromising band of local jazz greats regularly performing the tunes of Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Hutcherson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter and others. Over the years they have attracted a loyal crowd of hardcore jazz fans and students who show up on the monthly Thursday night when they perform.
Phil Hey, a swinging drummer and former student of Ed Blackwell, leads this group and announces the tunes from the stage with a little humor and a few interesting notes on the tunes they are presenting.
Philip C. Hey, is a drummer and affiliate faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Music, was born in New York City and grew up in Philadelphia. His early years were influenced by the music of the 1960s; his parents had music playing in the home "all the time" and he was fortunate to receive encouragement from his high school band director. Several years of study at the University of Minnesota in American Studies and Afro-American Studies and private study with Edward Blackwell, who defined drumming style in America, led Hey into a career in jazz. Hey has performed in concert, in clubs, on video, on national radio and television. He can be heard on several recordings, most notably Tribute to Mingus, released by the Tom Hubbard Ensemble.

The West Bank School of Music Jazz Composer Series of concerts in 1985 were recorded along with interviews with the Jazz composers by Richard Byron Strunk. These tapes were then used to create these 6 radio programs and were produced and hosted by Richard Byron Strunk. Originally there were 7 Concerts and I still hope to include the missing composers interview and music at a later date. These were first aired in 1985 - 1986 on KFAI "Fresh Air" FM Radio
Quick thank you to Warren Park who was the head of this entire project and originally encouraged me to do this and who was instrumental in its creation as well as thanks to all those involved from the West Bank School of Music. Thanks to Warren Park and the West Bank School of Music plus countless other composers, musicians and music lovers that made the broadcast of this concert series as a radio show possible.
